In the last three units, we have learnt quite a lot of Chinese vocabularies in Romanization. The foundation work
 that you have laid will help you a lot when you are learning to read and write Chinese characters in the coming 
units. In fact, knowing how to read and write Chinese characters can help you communicate with Chinese people
 more conveniently and successfully.

One of the major differences between Chinese and English is that we can guess the meaning from the structure 
of the Chinese characters while English words do not have the same characteristic because every English word
 merely carries the sound of the word. However, before you can really read Chinese, it is necessary for you to learn 
the structure of Chinese character in order to know the meaning.

Chinese characters are believed to have originated 6000 years ago. In the beginning, the characters were pictographs 
which originated from pictures of objects in daily life. This is why we can see the words of ancient Egypt and China 
are like pictures because people at the time imitated the image of the object and produced a word by drawing them.

It is easy for us to learn words of objects at first. Let us look at the Chinese character 日. It is developed from the old 
character " "  which looks like the image of the sun. 

The character 月 is also developed from the ancient character  ""    which looks like the image of the moon. 

People drew the picture of the sun to indicate it. After thousands of years, the pictures were changed to symbols for 
convenience in writing.

There are always more than one meaning in one word. For the character 日, besides the original meaning “sun”, it 
also means “day”; the character 月 means “month” besides “moon”. For example, When we see 三日, it  does
not mean “three suns” since there is only one sun. Instead, it may mean “three days” or “the third day”. It is the
 same for the word 月. 三月三日 means “the third day of the third month(March)”; 一年有十二個月
means “There are twelve months in a year”; 一星期有七日 means  “There are seven days in a week.”

When we put 日 and 月 together, a new character 明 with a new meaning based on the nature of the original characters 
is created. We can guess the character 明 by thinking the nature of the sun and the moon. Do you know the meaning? 
Yes, it means “brightness”.
